In general, there are two types glycol jacket for fermenter&BBT, dimple plate and belt. For nano or micro brewery, the dimple plate is more suitable.
Firstly, it is because the heat exchange efficiency of dimple plate is higher than belt based on same cooling area. As you can imagine, while going into the jacket and touching with the dimple, the “gentle” glycol would become “crazy”, then form turbulence immediately. If so, the “crazy” glycol can exchange the heat with the wort(beer) in the fermenter&bright beer tank evenly and fast.
However, for the belt, there is nothing inside, just like a river without stone, aquatic weed etc. The glycol would run peacefully along the belt. Therefore, the heat exchange efficiency is not good as we expect. What is more, it will cause the temperature of partial wort is very very low, even icing up on the welding line.
Not only the flavor of beer will be affected greatly, but also the thermowell might do not work.
Secondly, the dimple plate is more stable than belt, because each dimple would be welded on the interior shell, which is much beneficial to fix the glycol jacket. Accordingly, it will require more larbor, time and cost.
