Normally, the beer brewing equipment is made by stainless steel 304 or 316.
For stainless steel 304 and 316, as we all know, it is corrosion resistant because there is a high percentage of chromium. But, sometimes, we would see rust on the equipment’s surface, mainly around the welding. What causes rust on the stainless steel?
In fact, the rusting phenomenon is surface phenomenon only. After welding and polishing, although the weld surface may look clean, there is a thin residual layer of iron material on the surface. And, while storing and packaging the equipment in the factory, the equipment is possible to touch some other iron inevitably. The iron will rub off onto the stainless steel surface, and, after exposure to moisture in the atmosphere for a few days, it will form some rust. Although the rusted surface looks bad, the chromium in the stainless steel under the rust film forms a suitable corrosion-resistant oxide layer, and further corrosion does not continue. The rust will disappear after the usual cleaning. Therefore, you do not need to worry about this issue too much. The rust on the beer brewing equipment is not the phenomenon we expect, but it is easy to remove and would not do harm to the equipment.
